Purpose:
To provide Civil Works professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the evolving policies, guidance, and complex analyses required to successfully plan U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) aquatic ecosystem restoration projects.

Description:
This advanced Civil Works planning course is designed for experienced USACE professionals who are involved in planning, designing, and evaluating aquatic ecosystem restoration projects. Through a combination of expert lectures, practical case studies, hands-on group exercises, and a field site visit, participants will explore the key considerations and unique challenges inherent in the USACE aquatic ecosystem restoration mission. The curriculum covers current and evolving Civil Works policy and guidance, including determining resource significance, developing conceptual models, formulating and evaluating alternative plans, conducting cost effectiveness/incremental cost analysis (CE/ICA), and identifying and applying ecological models, and integrating risk and uncertainty into the planning process through monitoring and adaptive management. This course focuses on the specific analyses and unique requirements for aquatic ecosystem restoration planning; it does not cover the detailed environmental compliance activities common to all USACE studies.

Prerequisites:
This course is designed for Corps personnel involved in planning and designing, and evaluating aquatic ecosystem restoration projects, including planners, biologists, economists, engineers, project managers, and other planning team members. Recommended grade of GS-11 and above. A strong foundation in the 6-step USACE planning process is expected.
